After months of struggling against the proposed hyperscale data center through official channels, dissent has surely been registered— yet construction continues in the mesilla basin.
And now people are being arrested for refusing to be silenced.
The people’s opposition to Project Jupiter is clear: they don’t want data centers coming in and polluting the air while extracting water and energy from an already bankrupt watershed. But STILL, senators, county commissioners and officials are playing ball with Project Jupiter execs.
The companies behind Project jupiter have no problem playing dirty, and the majority of our politicians are fine with that, as long as they don’t take any heat for it.
Creative methods of subverting the usual channels are critical to making Project Jupiter a political inflection point that cannot be ignored or cooled off by attempts to silence or buy people off.
The brave people who disrupted the county commission meeting have brought more attention to this hyperscale data atrocity than ever before. They have demonstrated that this is a cause worth stepping out for. Their arrests and charges have exposed Dona Ana County’s willingness to side with Project Jupiter over their own constituents.
This is all vital to the struggle going forward and inoculating people against false solutions:
Project Jupiter is not simply a fight over economic development or environmental concerns. This is a life or death situation for the people of southern New Mexico and El Paso and deserves to be treated as such. It is worth fighting against with everything we’ve got. The County and State might decide to “regulate” or put up “guardrails” for Project Jupiter, but this is not enough. The demand is STOP PROJECT JUPITER and anything less is a smoke screen to shut people up.
RANM is calling for all charges to be dropped against the brave people who stood up against the Dona Ana County Commissioners attempting to silence them. We urge every person and organization who opposes Project Jupiter to release statements of support and stand against this blatant political repression. Stand with the Defiant Ones!
